Subject: (Adware?) Pop-up problem
OS: Win XP
CPU/Ram: 256 RAM
Comment:

I use Ad-aware, Spybot S&D and Spyware Doctor but none of these programs have detected or can fix this problem.

Recently everytime I have Internet Explorer open, even if I have a blank page up (ie no site loaded), an advertisement pop-up will appear about every minute or so. I have no idea how to fix this and it is *very* troubling. Can anyone offer any advice?

Thankyou
Mike

What kind of popup? If it is a grey box which states your computer is vulnerable with a link fo a thirty dollar cure that popups even when you are not connected to the internet. You need to turn off "messenger" in the control panel>admin tools>services. Schroll down to it and select properties and set it to disable and hit OK to turn it off. Since you have Adaware, they have a plug in that will also take of the problem. It is not msn messenger, it is for system administartors to be able to notify all the users that are connected on their network, so not many people need this servive enabled. Gibson Research also has a tool called "shoot the messenger" to fix this common popup problem. HTH

An alternative that is strongly recommended is the use of a router on any "broadband" connection.

The included firewall will stealth your ports and the messages will stop.

I've already got a router with a firewall and I've disabled the messenager. I still have the problem tho. I checked the pop-up window properties and all of them are based around the site http://www.680180.net/ like the one thats up now is http://www.680180.net/ads/?VFJDSz0xMzEz. I've set the site to be a restricted site so now the pop-ups still load but theres the page is blank. Thanks for the suggestions. Any other suggestions?

Thanks
Mike

I hate to pass the buck, but try the folks at http://www.spywareinfo.com/ If you need to use "hijackthis", you can post a "hijackthis" at that forum with no restrictions.

Do you use any pop-up stopper?
Did you try some better browsers like Mozilla, which has a built-in pop-up stopper?
