SpyBot has had some issues within the last two months on there newest version. Many including myself have given up on SpyBot, mostly because it is NOT the easiest to run and the updates do NOT always work. I personaly like Ad-aware 6 for checking on spyware. Ad-aware is simple to use and not only that the downloads always work.

Many users out there have both versions on there pc. There is no reason to have both. Ad-aware will take care of your spyware.

This post is not benefiting Ad-aware, I am not getting a kick back for saying there product is better than another. I just believe that if you don't want to run into any issues on your computer with updates for spyware your best bet is Ad-aware over SpyBot.

I have used them both without any issues for a quite a while now.
Today, with the proliferation of spyware, having those 2 progs running can benefit, assuming they don't break you or each other. But the benefit should be obvious.
I have seen different results from identical scans repeatedly from those 2.

Why rely on 1 "means of defense" when you can easily have 2...especially when they're free. You seem to forget that AdAware dropped the ball for a while, and still hasn't bounced back entirely,IMHO.I've only had one minor issue with SpyBot,that was soon remedied.A small price to pay for something I don't have to pay for.A lil' bug every now & then is better than no protection at all.

Hey,at least SpyBot didn't/has dropped off the face of the earth for several months.

For the record,I have and use both.

It's only more time wasted to scan if you have both versions. I too had both versions and never did SpyBot find anything that Ad-aware 6.0 didn't. Sure Ad-aware didn't come out with a new version for quite awhile, but also don't forget that earlier versions of Ad-aware didn't have a option to check for current updates like version 6.0 has.

SpyBot on the other hand has way to many items (if you don't know everything) and if once you had problems with downloads there will be more. I can remember last month when computing.net was loaded with questions about why the updates didn't work. Where were all those that backup SpyBot then instead of defending there FREE product?

My only suggestion is... why put up with even a FREE program that gives you headaches from time to time?

Go with Ad-aware and you keep the questions minimal on computing.net

>That only applies to you and your given situation at that particular time.

"...don't forget that earlier versions of Ad-aware didn't have a option to check for current updates like version 6.0 has."

>That's totally false. That's what the RefUpdate Add-on did.Not quite the same, but updates could be retrieved/installed w/o launching AdAware itself.

I agree with EC and the Kid.

I don't see any reason why a user has to chose one program or the other.

And if I did have to chose,I have Spybot on my pc.
Like the Kid mentioned,Adaware was very inactive for a number of months.
That's the only reason I never downloaded the new version. It's a matter of trust for me.
I do however have a backup spyware (Eliminator) removal program.
Regards,
JB.

The greatest of faults, is to be concious of none.

"My only suggestion is... why put up with even a FREE program that gives you headaches from time to time?"

My response to that statement is;
"Why put up with programs and suites at a cost of $480.00 to $2,800.00(us), that give you headaches from time to time?" :-) I'll direct you to my opening statement :-)

"Where were all those that backup SpyBot then instead of defending there FREE product?"

Not all answers are posted here. One simple answer for all problems would be great,:-) but it's not that simple. Sometimes people respond back by emails or give them a place to look for information.

See problems as opportunities for growth and self improvement.

Enough ranting :)

p.s. If you check the spelling on this :) Just look at the first thing I wrote :)

If I remember correctly the new AdAware had several bugs whne it first was released. There were lots of posts about it on the different security forums. No software is ever going to be 100% perfect all the time, because it's created by humans who screw up regularly :)

I feel more confident of Spybot. Lavasoft lost a lot of confidence in a lot of peoples' minds.

Why is that suzi? May it of been that they didn't put out a updated version when everyone wanted them to? **Remember it's freeware, so it's not intended to please everyone's whim.

But I will agree with you that NO software is ever going to be 100% perfect all the time. Just take a look at SpyBot!

SpyBot is much cooler sounding than ad-aware. This is reason enough to choose SpyBot IMO.

Or.. since they are both free and run relatively painless.. use both.

There not antivirus or firewalls or even office suites that run in the background causing conflict. They run when you tell them to and do as well as they can.

Go to www.spywareinfo.com and read the forum archives there from last fall and winter. That will tell the story.
