Hi everyone. I have been having problems with the new Adaware S.E.; for over four hours now. I can't find out any answers from Lavasoft's FAQ site regarding this. Is anyone else having troubles trying to obtain the lastest reference files?

I installed the latest build (I think) 1.01; SE1R2; 10.08.2004. from Majorgeek's website. When I click "check for updates", it tells me that a new(er) build is available; so I click to try and get it, and it appears to try and download it, but reverts back to a Lavasoft website...nothing downloads at all. It is a continuos loop of that, over-and-over again.

Does anyone happen to know where I could obtain the old origional version? I understand that reference files are only available for 90 days for the old build; but that version always worked well for me.
There must be some bugs with this new build.

I can't recall the website that had older versions of programs; I thought it was "old version.com", but that does not turn up anything.

Thanks very much all, and enjoy the rest of the evening! A dandy today here in New England..

Hi Lesley,

Adaware SE installer will prompt you for OK to uninstall the previous version it finds on your HD. This installer's pretty smart :-)

Hello Lesley and XpUser. Yes, I did a complete uninstall of the older version. This has got me sooo pissed off right now; as I have been trying to figure this out for over four hours now...
I'll have a look at that site, XpUser...maybe someone has similar problems / suggestions there. I'll post back here shortly.
Someday, I'm gonna learn..."if it ain't broke, don't fix it!!" But, thought I'd try out the new build, and that's what I get!!!

Well, I'm back... Now I feel better; at least I'm not alone with that issue. I was starting to "talk to myself"; and that's not a good sign LOL...

Think I'll uninstall this new version, and hope I can find the old reliable version somewhere. That one always worked well for me.

(chuckling) I can only imagine the fun I'll probably have with SP-2 ! I'm gonna pass on that one too, for time being anyway.

Thanks Leslie and XpUser for your speedy replies; I can now keep my sanity for a little longer now! Thought I was gonna have to "double up" on my pain medications.
Thank you!

I got the same message that a newer version was available and just ignored it. Only got it once. Ran the update and it showed a 200+ kb d/l. Shows Definition file: SE1R1 09.08.2004 as loaded. Seems to be running fine.

Hello JohnO; I got so confused with it, I finally uninstalled it completely.
It did scan nice for me, but my concern was that I didn't think I had the latest reference files installed.
Then when I read the link that XpUser provided, it appears that other folks have encountered the same problems that I had.
So, I decided to just get rid of it and see if Lavasoft straightens it out...it's probably an unknown bug and will hopefully get fixed.
Meanwhile, I'm looking for the old original build and will re-install that one until Lavasoft fixes the new version.
Take care, JohnO..have a nice evening..

Major Geeks is showing V1.02 available for download, but after installing that, it shows 1.01 in AdAware box. Could it be that this actually is 1.02, and a programmer put in wrong version nr?

tommyo,

we have an old saying, you can tell the pioneers by the arrows in their back.

I first heard that about computers in 1969.

Don't be in a rush to install new software.
I hope you find a download site for the old version.

Yesterday, lavasoft said v6 will be supported with updates. They didn't say anything about 90 days. There is no rush to upgrade. The command line commands are not be supported in the new version. I don't use command line commands for this product, but some people were upset.

Well right now I fired up Ad-Aware Se and did the check for updates. It did open an IE window to Lavasoft and said the same thing about an update. I clicked update again and it did update but I did it again and as you stated it is stuck in a loop.

I have the old Ad-Aware build on my system and might go back to it or try the new download but you are right, it does have a bug and I'm on XP SP2.

Just d/l'd Build 1.02 and installed, allowing the installer to uninstall build 1.01. The new build also installs the SE1R2 10.08.2004 definition file. Ran a full custom scan (all boxes checked that are allowed in the free edition) and had no problems. Win98SE O/S. When I ran the Build 1.01 earlier today, came up with a false positive "C:\Program Files\Norton Antivirus\symzip.dll" I restored this entry before installing 1.02.

Looks like Build 1.02 fixes some glitches in 1.01.

Good morning all; well, thanks so much to you all as I now know that my sanity "is intact" LOL! I'm (glad) someone else encountered the same difficulties as I. I was wondering if I was the only person to encounter this.
Hopefully, Lavasoft will get right on the problem and remedy a fix.

That's a nifty saying, blackdogx; I gotta remember that! I agree with you too, as I usually don't rush into the new updates/builds right away. But this time I thought I'd try it. Thanks Wombat, kevin, blackdox, JohnBC..I'll do some searching for the newer build.

Just wondering... are you folks going to install the new SP-2 as soon as it is available to us through WU? I know Kevin has it up and running and reports no major probs so far; wondering what the concensus is with some other folks too. Methinks I'm gonna wait a little while...I seem to have this bizaare luck whenever I install something new LOL....Thanks all; enjoy your Wednesday.

Hi everyone - Sorry you've had problems. It's recommended that you download Ad-AwareSE Build 1.02. It should fix any "glitches" in original version. Sorry for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience!

"Dear customers and users,
We are announcing a new build of Ad-Aware SE. Please upgrade your copy using your notification information or download a new copy from our mirrors. The new build should show 1.02 in the lower right hand corner of the main Ad-Aware SE status screen after installation. Please follow the recommendations in the installer by having it uninstall your current copy prior to installing the new build.

If you experience any difficulties please try again at a non peak hour. The delay in going live has been due to the need for updating all the servers and making sure that the files were properly uploaded."

I ran into the loop thing as others so today I tried again for 1.02 and after the uninstall option it hung up then I got a prompt to remove it from my computer-add remove at that point I put the old adaware back on.

I like the new look and options of 1.01 it picked up some new things one I questioned.

Hello mamabear; nice to hear from you. I was able to install the new core app 1.02; and the new ref files SE1R2, 10-08-2004

I obtained it from download.com; and the install and update went fine. Would you happen to know if the MRU's that are found, are the same thing as "prefetch" files? I chose not to delete them; just wondering what other folks are doing with their MRU's that are found.

Program runs flawless, and is very fast in comparison to the older Adaware build. Thanks all for your assistance, and many thanks to Lavasoft for all their continued great work!

Tommyo:

MRUs stand for Most Recently Used files. You can safely delete them, as they're simply a copy of an original file. In fact, I use MRU-Blaster from Javacool to blow out the MRUs which accumulate over time. Usually a few hundred after a week's worth of computer use.

PS Prefetch files are different than MRUs, but also can be safely deleted at any time.

I'm really getting absent-minded today--my third post. Here's the rest of the info on MRU-Blaster and a link.

MRU-Blaster is a program made to do one large task - detect and clean MRU (most recently used) lists on your computer.

These MRU lists contain information such as the names and/or locations of the last files you have accessed. They are located ALL OVER your registry, and for almost ANY file type. By looking at these MRU lists, someone could determine what files you opened/saved/looked at, what their file names were, and much more! (And, in many cases, the lists are displayed in drop-down menus automatically.)

Hello Solarian; how 'ya been? Thanks for that info! I wasn't too sure about them, so my past experience led me to ask first, before deletion.
Happy to report all is running fantastic here; just like the day I took the pc out of the box. What a nightmare I had by deleting those Windows files by mistake!!!

I ended up loosing everything; all my saved e-mails from sweetie in Vietnam; all photos; music files; everything. But, all is re-installed from scratch now, and running fine.

Nice to talk to you, my friend...take care Solarian.

I haven't been here at the forum too much lately, since my job has been keeping me busy. I drop by when I can, though. 8-)

Yes, I read about the ordeal you went through a few weeks ago. It's never reinstalling the OS that's so bad, it's the heartache of losing personal files which can never be replaced. In a word (which I'm sure you've heard before): backup.

Glad to hear that your computer's humming along.

Best of luck, Solarian

Evening All,
I have the Adaware 6 free Version. I always save the programs that I install. If anyone wants the old program, drop me a E-mail and I will send it as an attachment (1.7 Mb) to you.
Have a good one,
