Subject: adaware se freezes/does not complet
OS: ME
CPU/Ram: p111 (1000) 512
Comment:

I have tried versions 1.03, 1.04 and 1.05 of Adaware SE (free) and none will NOT complete a scan; usually freezing by the time it gets to file number 300+ or 512. Previous version of adaware uninstalled/removed and all programs (including anti virus) closed before installing on a win me machine. can find no answers or solutions on adaware site.

Hey did you try running it in safe mode to see if the same thing happens?

You might have the vx2 infection if it doesn't work in Safe Mode either.

Perhaps we can have a HijackThis log?

Please download HijackThis- this program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HijackThis.exe there. Double click on the program to run it.

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
3. Get HijackThis Analyzer and save it to the same folder as the hijackthis.log file. Run HijackThis Analyzer and type in y if you agree. The result.txt file will open up in Notepad. Copy the whole result.txt log and post it in the forum. We do not need the original hijackthis.log (unless we ask for it). Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.

give Spybot S&D a try....it should work for you.

Make sure to up-date it before using it.

I had a similar problem with Ad-Aware in the past and all i had to do to get it to finish was disable my virus scanner.

I have ran into that problem with Ad-Aware, if there is no free memory on the system to run it. Ad-Aware seems to use a lot of memory and makes dynamic requests for more as it runs.

On badly infected machines, the different ADware, Spyware, Trojans and Virus will take up so much of the systems RAM that Adware can not run after starting a scan. But with 512 of memory that should not be a problem.

On these machines you have to run an Anti-Virus program first to remove some of them. Then try to get SpyBot S&D to run and clean more out (but first you have to update it on line or it will hang).

Never had a bit of problem with adaware 6 before they discontinued and went with SE; this includes any program upgrades, etc. over the last couple years. machine is "clean" as to viruses or spyware.
