If this is the wrong forum I apologize in advance. Just seems its on topic with adaware problems. I have been using peerguardian2 to block ads. Worked perfect until I saw this MVPS file that you can add to your hosts file. I gave that a try and it works as well. I had peerguardian off and tried www.aol.com page loaded put all the ads were gone as usual. That’s the page I use to see if peerguardian is working aol seems to make it go crazy with ads. So I thought cool and turned peerguardian back on to see what happens and it don’t seem to be blocking anything anymore. Everything seems to be allowed although there are no ads. I guess my question is should I keep them both or get rid of one or both. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Heya mustang,

I use a custom hosts file and haven't had any problems with ads since it was created... so far.

The one I use is at the link below:

http://someonewhocares.org/hosts/

For me this method works very very well... and means I don't need to have a third party utility to do this for me.

Just one glitch though... unlike peer-guardian, the hosts file doesn't have an update feature and I'm waiting for the ads to slowly start coming back. This will indicate to me that I will need to update my Hosts file once again if they do.

EDIT: As you can se at the top of the page they update the page very regularly so updating the hosts file is no problem, just copy and paste the entire page into your hosts file without the very top and bottom line (Title - top / date and time - bottom)

Hey btk1w1,

This is the list I found today it’s at http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hos... It was last updated on 9/23/08 so yours seems to be newer. I like the updates that peerguardian has you can update daily. Do you know if there is any drawback to using both? I would hate for them to cancel one another out lol. Like I said earlier it seems that now peerguardian allows everything as apposed to blocking it but I still don’t get the ads.
Again thanks for your reply.

Heya mustang,

Keep the hosts file you have, it has twice as many entries. There are loads of malware sites included in it also.

6,500+ vs 15,000+

I have never used PeerGuardian and I can't advise whether there will be conflicts between it and your customised hosts file, but if the hosts file retains the alterations you have made and peer-guardian isn't reverting your hosts file back it should be all good if surfing remains normal.
