active x- what is ir and do I need it?

Acer / Aspire 1650

Specs: Windows XP
Everytime I go onto the internet or click on anything at all once on the net I get a pop-up that says 'Do you want to allow software such as ActiveX controls and plug-ins to run'. I don't know what this is or why it's there. Why does it appear constantly? Also what am I supposed to click on? 'Yes' or 'No'. When I do click on one of them sometimes I have to click on it several times before it goes and allows the page to appear. As you can probably guess I know nothing about computers or computer language! I would appreciate any help at all. Thanks.

Active X is a technology, not a specific program. Active-X is often used on websites to allow them to interact with your computer. For example, the Windows Update site uses Active-X to check your computer for needed updates. Active-X can also be used by bad sites to install malware on your computer. You need to decide on a case by case basis if you trust the website you are on to install Active-X controls.
