Many people on this forum swear by AVG; but if you go to the site:

http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/archives/products.xml?table

which compares the various programmes in competitive testing, AVG falls down flat.

Hey, I have an open mind... convince me...
what's going on???

Thanks for any opinions on the matter.

AVG is good and it is freeware.
I use it six months now and I know that two times it stopped viruses.
One that was in a floppy someone gave to me and Klez in email.
There are better ones like Norton but many times they don't like Windows so much.
AVG has an excellent behaviour, you don't even notice it's there.
(I would never use something like McAfee...)

There are other certification labs, like ICSA, and the European ones that Grisoft passes. In the US there is ICSA, West Coast and another certification lab that slips my mind, that you can check out. People have likes/dislikes about any product. It seems to me that people have a favorite anti-virus, anti-trojan and firewall based on their problems, ease of use, system performance, and how they perceived the product worked for them, when they had a problem. Grisoft offers a free product, that seems to keep and help many people out of some major virus problems. Take care and all the best!

Its good and free lol, thats a good reason :)
Its light on system, integrates very well, especially in mail ... and it cleans up your infections well.
As far as ICSA testing goes, thats a benchmark for the industry ... but that doesn't mean that it will always be correct.
Different environments and situations can give you different results. Just because you don't have the best ICSA rated scanner, you will get infected. Its up to you and how you use your pc ... if you live dangerously, then even the best scanner around won't save you. Once you have good practices ... AVG will be just fine.
Detection, heuristics and Cleaning are essential ... NOD32 is the best at that .. for free its AVG
