6 PCs in a month lost users profile then bsod

Specs: Windows XP
I have 6 customers who have experienced first, the loss of their profile, and of course Windows loads a default profile. Then shortly there after, they get a BSOD saying the hive, either /software or /system is corrupt, etc. This has happened on two identical systems almost simultaneously, and then on two systems in a single office, and two totally unrelated computers. Ive got to find a way to inform my customers of a way to protect from this, or i will be formatting a LOT of PCs this month... I'm thinking either a virus or perhaps some sort of glitch with a Windows update. all these machines are XPP or XPMCE.
Has anyone seen an increase in frequency of this issue? and has anyone found it's source, and a solution?

I also have a customer that has had this happen to 4 PC's in the last week. Something is up. Anyone solved this yet?

Hmmm, that is weird. Had the same problem with a customer on his laptop & desktop PCs within a week of each other - both running XP Pro. I ran scans on all of his hardware with no result, ended up formatting both & reinstalling as he didn't want the possibility of it happening again - so far they're still up & running with no problems after 2 weeks. I thought he was just unlucky, but maybe there is a connection...
