I have it set so that after my screen saver goes away, the welcome screen shows up and I type in my password to get in. Under my username it will say either "logged on" or "3 programs running" or whatever, depending on what is opened right.

So anyway, lately I have noticed that it says "1 program running" even when I have nothing open. I have checked in the task manager and there's nothing there that shouldn't be.

This may have started happening when I installed MS antispyware...could that be the program it's referring to? since it's active at all times?

Otherwise I am worried there's something running on my computer that I don't know about.

Thanks for any suggestions...

Jen

Open your Task Manager "Ctrl-Alt-Del", any programs running should be listed on the "Applications" tab.

If there is nothing there, go to the "Processes" tab. If you click the column header "Image Name", it will put them in alphabetical order.

Now compare your running processes to the to this web page that gives a description of each.

Failure to find anything out of the ordinary with the above method will require running something like "Hijackthis", but start with your Task Manager first.

By the way, lower left corner of Task Manager, how many processes do you show running?

yeah I keep a pretty close eye on my processes in the task manager, and they are all legit. And nothing is running under applications when this happens. it just seems weird that this started when I installed MS antispyware. I have it updated as well as ad-aware, CWShreddar, Spybot S&D, Spyware blaster and NAV, and none of those have found anything.

ok so I ran hijack this, and got my log file analyzed here:

http://hijackthis.de/index.php?langselect=english

and it said everything was safe. so I am hoping that means that whatever program IS running is safe.

27? Excellant!

If it doesn't show up in Processes or HJT log, I wouldn't worry about it.

To my knowledge, nothing can hide from HJT.

I only asked the number to see where your head was at. If you had said 40 or more, I'd have known that you were one of those people that downloads everything without thinking what you are doing.
