The nearest thing that you will find is probably the source code for Open Office. If you haven't done any serious programming be prepared for a steep learning curve. A simple text processor is a lot easier. It's the added frills that is the killer.

OpenOffice is a huge one. If I were you, for the first step, I would look at: Abiword (www.abisource.com) or KOffice (www.koffice.org).
