Windows file extentions

Is it really necesary to use windows registry to tell windows to open a file .txt with my program ?

I use delphi6.

Mmmmm... I'm no expert, but couldn't you just go to Tools-Folder Options in Windows Explorer, and on the File Types tab, set the .txt extension to open with your program? I do that all the time with picture files and different paint programs.
