Comment: Hi everyone, I've been using DOS/Windows ever since I started using a computer. I read more and more about Linux, how stable it is and how the open source help to develop quality software. I'm sure there are some of you using Linux, I considered posting in the Linux forum but since I wanted to have a programmers' point of view I decided to post here. Which Linux distribution do you recommend for a "not so experienced (2 years)" programmer? Thank you very much :)

Reply: (edit)I have used Red Hat...I beleive it is one of the most, if not the most, popular versions of linux available. It seemed good to me. Maybe try searching the web for some more info on the different versions to find one which suits your needs best. Good luck.

Reply: (edit)Don't get RedHat. They stopped making their free version. I would get Mandrake. If you feel like spending a lot of time for a quality OS, get Gentoo.

Reply: (edit)"a programmers' point of view " This is the best thing that I've seen on the forums tonight. I use Gentoo Linux with KDE 3.0 ... on two machines, one of which is my web server that hosts with Apache, MySQL, and PHP (known as LAMP). Great system... lets you "emerge world". :) IR
