Subject: Where can I learn to program?????OS: Windows XP SP 2CPU/Ram: CPU-1Ghz / Ram-376MbModel/Manufacturer: Toshiba |
Comment: I would like to learn how to program, but I know almost nothing about it. I would like to learn on-line and for free. I dont know if Visual Basic is the easiest, if it isn't, I don't mind. I would just like to learn it easily. If someone can tell me where I can do that I would really apreciate. Thanks Master of All

Reply: (edit)The first thing you need to decide is what kinds of programs you would like to create. Games? Web pages? Windows Applications? Network apps? Once you decide that, we can guide you to a good starting place. Of course, this decision isn't final or anything...Most programmers do more than one kind of applications. But knowing what your interests are will allow us to give you more relevant recommendations. And since pretty much everybody's response to this question is "Games", I'll just warn you in advance that game programming is the hardest kind, so be prepared to put forth quite a bit of effort for very little return at first if this is your choice :-) Good luck, -SN

Reply: (edit)I'm admittedly pretty biased, but the present and the future for windows app development is .NET. You have your choice of languages, but if you're starting fresh your best bet is probably the flagship language, C#. Visual Basic.NET is also available, but it's really no easier than C# these days. You can download Visual C# express edition for free, and that should be plenty to get you started on writing some fun stuff. They have starter kits for web, database, and games taht look pretty cool. Visual C# express edition Good luck, -SN

Reply: (edit)Yeah... .NET is one language for now and the future. But if U are planning for VB.NEt then I suggest U start with VB 6 first. Its not only easy to learn , but it will also help U to learn VB.NET easily. By the way the first thing I started doing on VB was games. And it was'nt the Hardest Thing bleive me.. U just need to have the imagination and idea of how a game works. As for Windows App.. VB is the best. Hope U will truely become the "Master of All" if u r not now ;) Samuel Roshan

Reply: (edit)"But if U are planning for VB.NEt then I suggest U start with VB 6 first. Its not only easy to learn , but it will also help U to learn VB.NET easily." No way...That would be a complete waste of time. VB.NET shares some syntactical similarities with VB6, but that's about it. VB.NET is much more object-oriented, and uses the .NET framework to actually get stuff done. VB.NET has much more in common with C# or even Java than it does with VB6. "By the way the first thing I started doing on VB was games. And it was'nt the Hardest Thing bleive me." I should have been more specific...Writing serious games is the hardest kind of programming. Obviously, if you want to write stuff like solitaire and minesweeper, by all means feel free to start with VB6. But serious game development is very difficult, and isn't done using VB6.

Reply: (edit)OK.. I agree with U about .NET differences to VB6. I was just suggesting an option. Do u think OOP is easy to learn for a beginner? About Gaming Programming.. when I said I do Game programming I did'nt mean Solitaire and Minesweeper. OK. I have been working on a "Serious" game project, and it is done completely on VB6. I have now compeleted the Isometric Editor..believe me its one of the best one developed so far in VB ;). Now I have started working on the AI part (of course its difficult to implement in VB) I know serious game development is very difficult in VB6. But still I have done and many are doing. And I love my work. Its all about What U are comfortable with. Samuel Roshan
