andy-
This is a question for the windows xp forum. Try posting there. They'll want to know a couple of things:

So if you put in a CD, your computer boots to windows O.K., but if you take it out, it doesn't? This is strange. What magic CD are you using?

I think you're paraphrasing the error messages...what exactly does it say when you try to boot without the CD?

If you put in a bootable floppy (get one from bootdisk.com), does it work? If it does, can you access the c: drive from the prompt? (just type in c: and press enter...See what happens.)

Good luck,
-SN

You might also want to check your BIOS IDE settings usually found under Hardware Peripherals or the like. See if your Hard-drive is properly configured and is "seen" by the bios. If it says invalid Volume or displays 0MB memory allocated try the "automatic disk detection" tool that should be located on the same page. If that doesnt help, open up your tower/desktop and check the jumper settings (if you recently installed a new hardware component that uses IDE cables than than the jumper settings most likly cause your problems.) If you find that two components have been set to "Master" than just set one of them to slave and it should work ^^

I do agreee with SN though that you should post the exact error message you get so we can narrow down the problem. Just let me know and I'll help you out as much as I can

Oh and i almost forgot. Your boot-sector might also have been corrupted. But it could be a million other things as well :s...sorry but I'd need more info

(Actually it should probably be in the General Hardware or DOS forum since this has nothing to do with Windows)

From the error messages you listed, it seems as if the hard drive is not being found.
This could be caused by many things:

—If your power supply has broke, and is no longer giving the hard drive the correct amount of power.

—If the power cable or ribbon (data) cable have became disconnected or broken.

—If the hard drive has failed.

—If the BIOS is misconfigured (such as not detecting the hard drive, or if one of the IDE channels has been disabled).

—If the motherboard is physically damaged.

I think the first thing you should check is the BIOS settings (choose Reset to Factory Defaults if you are not sure what to do there), then the hard drive connections and jumpers (disconnect the cables going from the hard drive and put them back on).
