Specs: MS-DOS 7.1, Pentium 4 / 1GB

What are the special characters that can be used on the DOS command line and in batch files in DOS version 7.10 or earlier, and how are they used?

I know about the redirectors "<", ">" and "|", but what other ones are there?

What are the forbidden characters? Does this version of DOS have an escape character? How would I use it?
