vlookup delays in updating spreadsheet

Specs: Windows XP
This is a hard problem to describe and I will admit i have not done too much VBA programming. I have two worksheets in a single workbook. The first is filled automatically using SQL from an oracle database. That seems to work fine. The second worksheet is extracting specific data from the first worksheet based on a list of values. I am using vlookup to pull the data over. Once that data is over I plan to do some analysis on it. I am getting a type mismatch error and it appears that the second worksheet is not filled with the data when I get ready to process it. I've put in sleep statements, built in do loops to wait, etc. Nothing seems to help. If i put in a trap and the program "stalls" for lack of abetter word, the worksheets gets populated. That led me to beleive I had to wait but so far have not been able to figure out how to do that and let the table get filled in. Any suggestions?

I have resolved this problem. Problem was traced to the SQL being executed in the background and thus my worksheets were not populated when I tried to step through them.
