Comment: subj I'm in college and we were given both editions. In my programming classes, the professors required all assignments to be written in VS6, although we were encouraged to install and accomodate ourselves with NET. Now that the school is over, I'm wondering whether I should choose VS NET over VS6, because I don't really feel like keeping both of them on my machine.

Reply: (edit)I had the same problem. It depends how comfterable you are with change. I am reaaaaaaly a complainer when it comes to change programing versions and/or languages. NET framework is much different than before. I use VB6 and now I am learning VB.NET and let me tell you i am lost. But i keep one thing a lecturer of mine said. "Don't be afraid to explore". So i bit the bullet and upgraded. In my opinion, try to use the newer version. Technology will not go backwards and so is all programming languages. On the long run .NET is going to be the main stream of programming.

Reply: (edit)I have both of them on my machine, it doesn't really bother me. However, if you were to choose, I suggest keeping the .NET edition as the prior 6.0 edition will loose support eventually and microsoft is pushing .NET development for windows based machines. Plus with .NET and MONO, you can use C#, etc for Linux development.

Reply: (edit)If u want dot net there is a free dotnet IDE called sharpdevelop google for it :D It hasnt VC++ yet but is planned for the next version. There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. Some kind of high powered mutant never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die
