Subject: Visual C++ v.6.0? What do I need?OS: WinMECPU/Ram: 1.2gAthlon/512 |
Comment: I am new to all of this. I was recently given a book for beginning direct3D game programming. I was really excited until I began to read and discovered that not only would I need some baic knowledge of C, and some C++, but I would also need a program which the book calls the "Microsoft Visual C/C++ 6.x 'or better compiler'". This book was first copyright in 2000, revised in 2001. Since I know virutally nothing about this, I don't know if this is a current version of this C++ program or not. I found a copy for sale on outpost.com that was called "Microsoft Visual C++.NET Standard", is this what I need? I would really appreciate any help in figuring out what I need. And, if anyone knows of any resources for beginners, such as books or websites on how to start using C or C++, that would be great too. Thanks much, Matt.

Reply: (edit)The .NET version is the most current. Version 6.0 is its predecessor. Either would work fine for game programming, however, since you are new to programming I would advise that you not take such an advanced approach just yet. Game programming in general and graphics programming (especially under Windows) specifically, are advanced subjects that take more than just a "working knowledge of C/C++" to master. As to resources for learning C/C++ there are alot of good books but for more emmediate information try ZDNET/CNET, cprogramming.com, http://www.cantrip.org/realworld.html and http://www.triad-solutions.com/C-Programming.htm for starters. These sites also have cross links to other sites that might be helpfull. Obviously, this forum too can help with SPECIFIC questions you might be stuck on. Good luck! You have a long road ahead of you but if you stick with it, it is well worth the effort! borelli34@cox.net

Reply: (edit)Thanks borelli! Yeah, I guessed this wasn't a general or beginners forum, but I thought I'd try for some advice any ways. I'll use those other sources you posted for general information on the subject. I'm sure I'll get to my game programming book someday... Thanks again, I appreciate it. Matt.
