But also, how do i use it and is it free, and which one should i get? I want to make a loading bar with a bit of text around it with a picture that changes at the side. The loading bar doesent actually represent anything, but its just for looks. Any ideas?

VB is a programming language...and also happens to be quite similar to the name of the software by Microsoft for writing VB programs. You can get VB 2008 Express for free at their web site.

Not only OS's can have service packs, btw. :) A service pack is basically just a software upgrade. A mega-update, if you will. Windows and Office commonly get them, but there's no rule that says a company can't put out service packs for its software as opposed to releasing a whole new version every few months.

As for your project...sounds like a decent start. You'll need to learn a bit about VB to get it done, of course, but that's part of the plan anyway, right? :)

Microsoft has free (lite) editions of Visual Studio, which it calls "Express" versions. Get Visual Basic 2008 Express...that'll be enough to make simple VB programs. You'll find some sample programs and forums and such there too, if you look around.
