Hi!
I've been browsing, searching on google without any luck. I'm trying to find a way to create a virtual device. I do know the subst command but that'll just create like a shortcut to a directory, it's not a virtual cdrom, it's a virtual harddrive. So if anyone knows a way to create a virtual CDROM drive then I would really appreciate it if you told me. Then I want to know how you can discover if a drive is virtual. Thanks a lot!

If you google for "virtual cd control tool" you'll find this:

http://www.softwarepatch.com/window...

I haven't tested it, so beware, but it looks promising.

So what are you looking for? Can you elaborate? From your earlier description, it sounded as if the Virtual CD control panel did what you were asking.

Tony & Razor, I've never heard of Daemon Tools before so I'd be interested in trying it. Can you tell me a bit more about it, how does it differ from Virtual CD Control Panel - is it just easier to use or does it have additional capabilities, e.g. does it support music CDs or just data CDs like the VCDtool?

Just install it and play around with it. It by far the best free solution. It supports any kind of disc, but only certain image formats.

No not those programs like Alcohol nor deamon tools. I'm not looking for any tools or any kind of software. I'm looking for a way to create a virtual cd device from windows. thanks a lot for trying but sorry that's not what i'm looking for.

virtual cd device
I think you think that phrase doesn't mean what we think it means.

From his explanation, Daemon tools will do that exactly.

Wille,

You're saying that software is not what you're after, but we are wondering if it's not software you're after, then what is it? So what exactly is your definition of a "virtual CD device"?

Perhaps you've misunderstood what this software does. You run the software, you give it a CD image file name, it reads that file and it creates a drive letter. Then you can use that drive letter in any Windows application, or even in Explorer, just as if it was a real CD-ROM drive.

Exactly! That's what I want to do but without any software like deamon tools or alcohol.

So, you want a program, that's not a program... I can see why you're having issues.

So basically you want to create virtual cd-rom devices without the use of software?

Good luck, cause Windows doesn't have any built in tools to do that.

Wille,

Having re-read your original post I can understand your request better. Unfortunately, you can't do it in Windows without installing extra software. (But don't let that put you off because this sort of software is not at all intrusive and once it's running you can forget about it.)

I'm just wondering where you're coming from. Is it that you've got experience of some flavour of Unix where such a capability is built in to the operating system, and you're expecting Windows to have it too? If that's the case, I can understand why you seem adamant about not using software. Coming from such a background, it's not a silly request.

But it's kinda silly if you're not coming from UNIX's, "Let's treat everything like a file!" camp.

For what it's worth, DAEMON tools is broken into two parts. The kernel driver, which does all of the work, and the GUI, that provides you with an interface to the drivers.

Ok I hear ya. You can't create a virtual cdrom device in windows without software. But is there a way you can do it with a script? Like a command line program or some way in vbs or just vb9.0? Because that would be great! Thanks for all help!

For example, I have this flashdrive, sandisk U3 product. And when I insert it in a USB port it creates a virtual cdrom drive! If someone know they do that I'd love to hear it! Once again thanks for all help!

VBS? No. The ability would need to exist natively. VB9? Probably not, being dependent on .NET and all.

If someone know they do that I'd love to hear it!
It's something of a hack, as I recall; the USB stick reports itself as a CD-ROM (vs. removable drive).

There are command line programs to do it, but I thought you didn't want to use any third-party software?

No I can accept a command line program, and also I didn't meen that the flashdrive creates itself as a virtual cdrom, I ment that it creates another drive for kind of a manual for features and stuff.

Yes, I know; I've used the drives before. And I'm pretty sure that's how they do it.

Ok sorry, I just thought so because you wrote that it reports itself as a virtual cdrom. But do you know how it creates it?
