Video Game-What do I need?

I whould like to make my own video game for the PC but I don't know what I need What do I need to make a Video Game? If there is software involed it has to be free because I'm still trying to get a job so I can have money. If I need to learn a Programming language I will take the time to learn it and take it seriose. What do I need to start a video game or to learn about them so I can make one? It can be in 2D or 3D Thanks PhantomSonic-We are all born with a destiny.Some of us know it and some of us are still searching for it.

Most games are written in C or C++. If you wish to do so as well, you'll need (at a minimum): 1. Visual C++ Express 2. The Windows SDK 3. The DirectX SDK MS also seems to be pushing something called The Game Creators GDK. I'd assume the DirectX SDK is a part of that package, but I haven't checked.
