Switching between OS using an application

February 20, 2012 at 02:53:30
Specs: Windows 7
i want to create an application that helps users switch between their OS. for example if a user has dual boot installed (windows, ubuntu) and wants to switch between OS without restarting their laptop the user will just simply press a short-cut key that will help them do so.

now first of all i want to know if my idea is even possible? if yes i would like to know how to get started any advice will be appreciated.

Well, you can't change to another OS without rebooting. You could easily write something that changed the default OS on reboot (OS/2 used to have such a facility), but I can't really see the point when a boot menu does the job.

To complete what ijack posted be aware you can run concurrently two or more operating systems by using virtual machines. VMware can even access a real hard drive as boot volume for the guest environment. To switch operating systems in that way is easy as switching applications under Windows or Linux. So I think your idea has little or no space on the market.
