Monday morning problem. It booted up OK and I downloaded SuperAntispyware program (and installed it)to have it check my machine. It took nearly an hour and found 3 cookies which I left alone and X out of program leaving them in(I know what they were - trusted sites).
I run antivirus 24/7 same one for years.
Anyways after the spyware check, the machine was acting slow and I was getting messages that certain things were missing their .dll files and was to do a checkdisk. Chdk.exe would not work. Missing .dll file. Checked for similar problems by others on net and got no solution. So I restarted computer.
Now am stuck on DOS and windows will not load.
I tried to use XP disk in CD rom, it reads a bit and then shuts off. Now, I pulled the CD rom out previously and swapped it with another different CDrom make( but I didn't put in a driver for the new make) I have also not used the cd rom but I have turned on the machine to cruise the net. Is it possible because I switched the CD rom units that the driver program disappeared? Because the original one is back in there because I was hoping that the XP CD would be read (if it was loaded in the CD tray)
On the DOS screen it shows that the secondary master is the cdrom.
It is searching for Boot record from IDE-0..OK
And is sitting there.I am on another machine writing to you.
Anybody know what happened? And what do I do?
Besides getting the gun out??whatcha gonna dew

fried,
you said:

I think IDE-0 is your hard disk and it is semi corrupt. it is good enough to be recognised as a bootable disk, but not good enough to fully boot.
If you have to boot from CDROM (XP CD?), you have to change the boot sequence in bios.
Press the appropriate key (Del or F2 or so) while booting and change boot sequence in your bios to boot from cdrom first.
And let us know the results.--
Holla.

FIRST BOOT DEVICE CDROOM: CREATIVECD3630E
(so at least the CDrom is recognized)"my quote"
Then I hit enter key
then the CDROM FIRED UP
then on the screen appeared:SEARCHING FOR BOOT RECORD FROM CDROM..notfound

I think your xp cd is not bootable.
You can create a bootable cd by following these instructions:
1. http://articles.techrepublic.com.co...
2. http://www.nu2.nu/bootcd/wxp/--
Holla.

Just a quick question(as I am still studing the instructions)
1. I do not have a CD burner
2. I have a 3 1/2" floppy drive. If I
could find it, could the DOS setup disk
be of any use here?
3. If it can be of use But I could not find
the disk is there a way of getting the
information from a different computer? I
have 3(but all different makes)
Just asking..whatcha gonna dew

Just asking..Just to be clear. This machine "that I am responding on" is also WinXP. It originally was Win98(and I do have the Win98se disk) so I "could go backwards >yes?/no?< and format the other problem machine and load Win98se and then upgrade with the XP disc?
I hate formatting. I am one of those people who managed to "fucq it up somehow" by touching the wrong button or something like that. But again I need to make a DOS start up disc most likely to start this going, I am guessing.

One last thing B4 I jump in and attempt it... the XP was NTF. not FAT. Comment please.

Here is something you could try to start setup to reinstall or possibly do a repair install. I have not personally used this method and couldn't easily test it because I don't have any standard IDE drives attached.
This won't work with some hard disks or cd rom drives, if it's ide it *should* work.
Go here http://www.allbootdisks.com/download/98.html.
Click on "Automatic boot disk", then click on and download "windows98_se.exe". Now put a floppy disk that has nothing important on it in the floppy drive and double click on "windows98_se.exe", it will make a boot floppy.Go here http://www.uv.tietgen.dk/Staff/Mlha/download/drivers/index.htm, the click on and download "smartdrv.exe". Copy "smartdrv.exe" onto the boot floppy.
Boot the problem computer with the boot floppy(make sure the bios is set to boot from floppy). Select "start the computer with cd-rom support" and wait for it to boot up, you will see some warnings about c: drive not recognised, ignore them. Insert your xp cd-rom in the cd drive. Towards the bottom of the screen you should see "a:\>", a few lines above this their should be "x: xxxxx" whatever x: is will be the drive letter of your cd-rom, take note of it for later. If you have multiple cd drives they should all be assigned letters, your drive should be one of the drive letters listed. It may be a little trial and error to find which one.
At the "a:\>" prompt type in "smartdrv" and hit enter. Now type in "x:" and hit enter where x: is the cd-rom letter from above. Type in "cd i386" and hit enter, if you get "directory not found" or something similar type in the next listed drive letter(ie type in "y:" and hit enter) and try again until your at the "x:\i386>" prompt. Type in "winnt" and hit enter. Setup will start follow the prompts/directions.

Sometimes it takes the coffee awhile to jolt the memory.
A point that is being missed. Initially this all came about because I tried to sway CDROMS ( a reader for a burner) I did the physical work but did not put in a driver nor did I use the CDRoms (but I did turn on the computer and surf the net)
They were 2 different makes of CDROMS
Now, before I started to use the CDROMS, I swapped them back(physically) and did nothing more. And dumped my CD's into them. Now have they forgotten the information required to get the CDRoms up and going?
Also, the CDRom in the problem computer is a CREATIVE 36MX. It worked fine before, but I do not have a CD driver disk for it(if it needs it)
Also(and this might be important. The IDE cable (is that the thin cable with the two black ends that fit over 4 fine silver pins lined up in a row(one set on the CDROM unit and the other set on the motherboard? This Azura PC does not have that set of 4 on the motherboard anywhere and there was none hooked up to the CDRom unit. In fact the only leads I got floating around are power wire couples from the converter(for additional devices, but nothing that matches the 4 pin female connector.
