what is the difference between isalnum(5) and isalnum('5')

One returns 0.
The other returns non-0.

isalnum() is expecting a character as its argument (input). Passing it an integer value (isalnum(5)) will likely result in its looking only at one byte of the integer (either 0x00 or 0x05), neither of which counts as an alphanumeric character (thus, 0 returned).
