This question is not in regard to the laptop I'm using now. I bought and will receive it today. It's a Dell Latitude C640 with 512MB RAM and a 40GB hard drive with a fresh install with Windows XP Home. I primarily bought this laptop to learn how to partition, dual boot and learn Linux, which once I find and learn a suitable distro for me, I'm going to migrate. I just don't want to mess up my main laptop in learning. My question is whether 40GB is enough to install two operating systems. I would like to keep Windows on it, but I don't know if it would be cramped for space.

This is the Programming forum. Were you asking about writing an OS, this would be your best bet on this site.

As written, this question should be asked on the WinXP or Linux forum.
