Google has programs called bots/webbots/googlebots searching the internet, caching pages and data. This is built into an index. This process is done regularly (maybe every 2 months? Can't remember - search for "google dance" for more info).

The way to gain priority in search results is to have your page linked to by many other pages (the bots go to SiteA and SiteB and find both link to SiteC), make a really popular site searched/visited often, or pay for a directory listing and search priority.

We should all collaborate on a google bomb and steal "Talentless Hack" from Andy Pressman.
