Comment: I'm new to Unix and I have a requirement to send a file from Unix to a port to be picked up by a J2EE app listening on that port. Before I spend weeks trying to figure out how to do this, does anyone know if Unix can even do this and what would be required?

Reply: (edit)Yes, basically anything can be done in UNIX that can be done in any other OS but the questions is how you plan to go about it....Do you require a programatic approach or are you looking for a ready made driver. Will this be implemented from within another program or as a script? These are all questions that must be asked before they can be answered so I guess what I am saying is that some more information (specifics) would help us a great deal in helping you with your question. Reply: (edit)I just found out that the requirements are not quite what I thought. We need to send a 'printfile' from mainframe to a Unix box on a certain port. That's it. I've written a Java class that sends text from my machine to that port on the unix box to test it and it works fine, but my co-worker seems to be having trouble sending any info to the same port from the mainframe box. He's trying to send what would normally be sent to a printer from mainframe to unix as a file.

Reply: (edit)Not knowing your complete setup, I have to ask. Is there any chance that the port is virtual under UNIX and may differ on a client?
