Is there any operating system written specifically for programming purposes? No networking, or security needs, just plain, programming. Java, C++, C, and others.

Thank you very much,
Tim

Um, NotepadOS?

Seriously, what would be the point? Today I spent 8 hours writing Java. I used networking to access the Java API on Sun's website. I used security features of Windows to lock my workstation so my roommates didn't format my hard drive (they think it's funny, and it was the first 12 times, but not anymore). I drank way to much Mountain Dew.

All these things are very important for programming. Any newer system boots up plenty fast (XP especially, but Fedora Core 2 [Linux] boots pretty quick too).

If you want a quick, stable, and simple system, install something like Windows XP with only the programming basics: Winamp, Notepad, and the compiler (in that order).

If you REALLY want to get what you seem to be asking for, your best bet is a stripped down version of Linux. No X and disable all the services. Just the console, vi, the compiler, and you (with Winamp running on your other machine of course).

You write a program(application) to run in/on an operating system. If the application is for Windows why write in Unix? If the system has a cross compiler you could, but you still have to test in the target environment.

Just my 2 cents.

Unless you're unfortunate enough to have to write it in Java as I am. Then it doesn't matter where you write it, it's just as painful on Windows as it is on *nix :)

Hey, I like Java...
It's much less painful than C++ (which, btw, is my favorite language)

Gentoo Linux is a good development OS. Not for windows applications, obviously.
