Hurm... No offence, but maybe you should learn some other language than Basic & Java. None of them are as powerful as you need.

Basic? No one who has finished puberty programs with Basic any more.
Cobol is for wimps
Java? Java is going to die a very horible death, Sun slit their own wrists by suing monopoly soft(That's Microsoft for all you Kool-Aid drinkers) BTW I don't believe you can run Java in dos(Dead Operating System).

Learn C++ if you want to make games.
Learn VB if you want to make Windows apps quickly and with ease.
Learn C# if your bored and have nothing better to do(C# is what you get when C++ and VB get drunk one night and deside to make children).

P.S If you learn VB, pick either .net or VB6 and Commit to it. If you teach your self VB6 then later upgrade(I think .Net is a derailment not a upgrade) to VB.net your going to get very screwed up(forms are handled very very different from VB6 and .Net, plus chances are your VB6 code is worth as much as bill gate's hair cut when you try and port it over to .Net. Alot of my VB6 programs don't convert eaisly and they need to be totaly rewritten which is not going to happen)
