Solved I am making an Artificial intelligence (AI)

Specs: Windows 7, 8GB
Is it possible for me to make an OS that only does 1 thing? This one thing is, like all OS's it will show my logo and all and then have a sign in and load the os. But I need it to auto run a batch file and oh, possibly open jpegs that the batch file calls, that's it. Here's the tricky part though. I need it to run from a store bought external hard drive, is this possible? In summary I need to know if I can make an OS that runs off an external hard drive and is coded to only run jpeg and batch files?

You can make an OS that does pretty much whatever you want - if you have the knowledge and time. You would need a great deal of both. Of course anyone with that kind of knowledge wouldn't be asking basic questions on a forum.

But wouldn't it be better to avoid all that and just use an existing OS?

Sure, it's possible. Go here and start learning:

Be careful posting on the forums; discussions there are really meant for experts and they can be quite fierce with people asking questions that are answered on the wiki. Best to lurk a while before posting.

Nothing will run off a hard drive. You need a motherboard, CPU, PSU, Graphics module, Sound module, PSU, and all the rest of the hardware. I'm surprised you want to invent an operating system for this purpose. It would seem easier to use a computer with an installed operating system (DOS or Linux maybe) then write script to achieve your objective. Even that would take some doing.

This might have potential:

The opening post sounds like he just needs a program, not an OS.

I have done lots of programming, and I still haven't made an OS ;)

Hi there.
