How did you learn to use BAT?

Subject: How did you learn to use BAT?
OS: XP Pro SP2
CPU/Ram: 3GB RAM
Model/Manufacturer: Dell Precision 360
Comment:
I'm trying to learn how to write more complex BAT files by asking questions here, and from reading the help files. But it's painfully slow learning this way. It all seems like gibberish, and the application usually escapes me. There's got to be a better way...

How did you learn?

learn a real language. There are quite a few to choose from. Python/Perl/Ruby, even Java and Vbscript etc.

I learned the hard way.

I think a better way is to find an instructor. She/he can save hours of frustration by spotting errors.

If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.

How'd I learn? By keeping ECHO on.

Seriously, so many, "Why don't this work?" questions can be answered by leaving the ECHO turned on.

When I was 10yo, I had a very old pc with IBM dos and games and stuff, but I got a virus and after that the file manager GUI didn't work anymore.. I was too lazy to type everything in dos all the time so I started reading the "IBM DOS v5.0 - User's Guide and Reference" book.
And with the help of that book I made my first batch scripts where you could choose what game you wanted to play.

That's how I started with batch scripts.

A good way for people these days is to use the /? switch of different commands (especially the built-in ones).
