Yes, Yes, I know I'm still in the stone ages with dialup but at $8/month I'll survive.

Earthlink, AOL and Netzero all advertise hi-speed dial up. Since everyone is still connecting through the same phone line and your speed is dependent upon your distance away from the CO, nothing has changed correct? I would guess that these companies have written their programs to tweak the Internet Properties. Does anybody have any ideas about how things are being tweaked and they are acheiving up to 5X faster??

In addition to the cache and image file compression, some use their own compression of the data stream between them and their support program. But the V.44 standard gives about the same results.

Your best "tweak" is to clean up your end of the phone line if you can, and get a good modem with full support for V.92 and V.44 and an ISP with that supports both. Few do. V.44 compression can help. Many of the older V.92 modems and upgrades do not include the V.44 compression feature. Most of the major ISP like Earthlink and AOL have not updated many of their modems for V.44 compression.

To get full advanage of V.44, you need to use an internal modem, ie. a WinModem where the system processor does most of the work. The normal serial interface can not handle data fast enough.

One of the best low cost modems with full V.92/V.44 support is the Modemsite modem. It or any of the Lucent/Agere 1648C DSP chipset modems using the current Agere modem830 drivers will give you the best connection speeds possible on your phone line and V.44 compression if your ISP's hardware supports it.
