This is kind of a newbie question, but I know you can do them (GUI's) using C++ and I'm guessing that you have to get the to work directly through DOS (tell me if it's optional)? But along with C++ is there any other language that you must know how to use?

You COULD use C++ and DirectX to create a GUI to windows. If you want to create it for Linux you could try OpenGL or SDL, but i (unfortunatly) dont have any experience with any other API the DirectX. But it depends ofcourse on for what you are making th GUI for. Have you made your own text-based C++ program and want to make a nOOb-style GUI for it?

An excelent tutorial I found on Win32 programing (GUI programing in Windows) can be found at www.winprog.org the tutorial is writen for the C language but can very easily work with C++. Useing this tutorial you can learn to make profecional GUI applications. There are some GUI tool kits and class librarys and all sorts of yummy goodies to make your life easyer spread all over the internet, but I like dealing directly with the API. Though im quite new. You might want to look into MFC (Microsoft Class Foundation) something that I am afraid to touch.
