Under linux, the device is /dev/dsp for both playing and recording sound. Look for the Sound Programming HOWTO. If you want Windows, good luck.

you need to give a better discription please. Please state your operating system, example: Windows 3.x, 95, 98/NT or unix. It may be a simple problem like your speakers not pluged in or they were over drived, or it could be software related like maybe you need to adjust the volume controll. Sorry I could not help
