format command for my version ofDOS

typing format c:\ doesnt just work.do i need another command to order my pc to format my c drive form DOS.i feel it has to do with my versionof dos.t/y for your help.A.R.

What version of DOS?

i dont know the version of dos. how do i find out which one it is?.th respond to typing format c: or format.exe is incorrect fiel name or bad command.

If you get incorrect file name or bad command then the FORMAT progran is not on your boot floppy.

The command for version is VER

Do a directory listing to find what programs are available. DIR
