I posted the following question very early this afternoon in the XP forum, but unfortunately there were no responces. I hope that someone in this forum will be more apt to be of assistance.

My mother (who lives in another state and just had her 80th birthday) has a challenge reading the alt text in the allotted viewing time, when browsing the net. She also has XP Home.
Is there a way to extend the viewing time of the alt text, oe even have it viewed until the pointer is moved off of the object?

I've noticed that the desktop icons will leave the text displayed indefinitely, but not in a browser.

I have searched computing.net and MS, but nothing on this subject applied to this situation.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Wanting to Help Mom, Richard

Doen't the alt text display only until the
image finishes loading?

If you want just the alt text, maybe disable
graphics display.

I'm not absolutely certain that this will do the trick but give it a try.

FIRST, back up the registry as this involves changing a registry value.

Second, run regedt32 from the start/run menu.

Third, find the following key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Internet Explorer/Main.

Fourth, find the value entitled 'expand alt text' and edit its value (if it doesn't exist then create a new string value named 'Expand Alt Text'. Make or change its value to 'Yes'.

Fifth, some will tell you it is not necessary to restart your computer but after any changes to the registry (no matter how simple they may seem) rebooting does 2 things for you. One, it reloads all of the registry values. Two and even more importantly, it will let you know emmediatly if there is a problem with something that was changed and give you the chance to revert back to the most recent working configuration.

I hope this helps your mother...
