If you are starting from scratch then there is no such thing as an easy programme to learn. Visual Basic is by far the easiest to learn if you have had previous programming experience.

Regardless of which programme you chose, you are going to have to start of learning some of the fundamentals of computer programing and they are much the same for any programming language.

What should be the deciding factor is what it is you wish to do with this programming skill. What types of programmes are you likely to want to write.

On my site I have a tutorial on Java. The good thing about this tutorial is that it explains programming logic, pseudo-coding, and how computers and the computer components interpret and process machine level code. This is an intro to object-oriented programming in general, using Java. This tutorial is very comprehensive.

Stuart is dead on...The larger question when picking a starter language is what kinds of applications you plan on writing. Web, scripts, windows apps, etc.

Personally, I'm a C# fan.

Good luck,
