I can recommend a few things. A degree in both Electrical Engineering AND Computer Science would be very nice for starters. Experience with creating electronic products would also be of great asset. You would also need a truck load of $$$ for R&D, not to mention the patents that you might want to secure. There are also legal issues including the hiring of a lawyer in case someone would want to sue you for doing something stupid with your product.

You would also have to hire a TEAM of people to work with you on this project. You don't see a single man alone putting up entire scaffolding on construction projects. If you don't have these credentials or even come close to meeting half of the minimal requirements to get started you may as well trash the idea. DVD players and any kind of electronic device for that matter takes many months and not unusually, years to develop.

I think bensuper was refering to a piece of software. Hence, he posted in the "Programming" forum, not the "Modern Embedded Media Devices" or even "General Hardware" one.

Besides, I do not need an EE or CS degree to build a small computer system with a dedicated DVD player. This is nowhere near the science involved in algorithms or circuitry.

I would suggest you take a look at open source media players and view the complexity involved in them (specifically their source code).

To get started, you really need to understand the OS environment you are working in and its window manager. You will also have to support one or more graphics cards.

Look into MPlayer.

Yes, MPlayer is for Linux. I would suggest you play with open source components as much as possible - they will give you the greatest access to the system and the most customization.

Check Freshmeat.net and Sourceforge.net.

It is difficult to interpret what people want if it is not stated specifically. Some of the topics posted in this forum along with their description are ambiguous and are as broad and flat as a grassy plain. Not only that, some of the topics don't even belong in this forum. This is why I had said what I had said, strictly bent on the thought that bensuper's intentions were to create hardware (from the look and sound of the description). No hard feelings, just a misenterpretation on my part 8)

Regards,

P.S. I came across a site a while back that offers access to open source projects involving development of DVD/VCD players involving Linux/Windows software.

http://www.dmoz.org is one of the many open source sites out there. This link: http://dmoz.org/Computers/Software/Operating_Systems/Linux/Hardware_Support/Video/ takes you directly to an open source MPEG/DVD/VCD player. This is a site I check out often for various drivers for Windoze.

I hope this helps. I hope it didn't seem like I was making fun of your topic. That was NOT my intention at all. Once again I apologize for the misinterpretation.
