Specs: Windows xp
stop dos program from hiding taskbar in xp. I would like to use screen capture and other xp commands (print, save as etc.), but cannot. The only control is the old software itself. No mouse control, just up, down keys and enter or esc. If the taskbar were present I could muddle through.

Legacy DOS applications in VGA graphic mode (640 X 480) require full screen since XP low resolution is limited to SVGA (800 X 600) so they can't be executed in a window. Mouse support is given if present in the original DOS application.

Windows XP is an NT kernel based system and offers natively only a limited built-in DOS emulator, NTVDM (NT Virtual DOS Machine) automatically invoked when running 16 bit programs. To get full control over XP environment while executing DOS applications you need to run them inside a true virtual machine like MS Virtual PC or open source VirrtualBox (both free) under a guest operating system as MS DOS or FreeDOS (free). An alternative may be DOSBox that has a built-in DOS system oriented to old games.
