How would you judge whether or not software produced by yourself was of good?

That depends on what you mean by "was of good". Are you talking about functionality or marketability?
For functionality: 1: Does it do what it's intended to do? 2: Does it do it in the most efficient way?
For marketability: 1: As above 2: As above 3: Is it cross-platform compatible? 4: Does it fill a niche? 5: Is it user-friendly? (intuitive interface) 6: Is the GUI visually attractive?
These points are not listed in order of importance.

A programmer is the worse person to judge his own software. He can only judge usefulness only in the scope of his understanding of the problem. A major problem is usually error handling, especially bad input.

So, in other words, try out the program first and if there are any errors, collaborate with a fellow programmer. Right?

Have different persons run and test it. A person familiar with function of the program that can comment one the functionality and accuracy of the program and a person unfamiliar with computer usage to determine program ease of use and program interface.
