Was wondering if anyone else has heard of this package, and if anyone has tried it? I dont like all this visual programming BS and loved the old basic and this seems to resemble it the most I think.

Thanks

It is a good attempt to simplify game programming but not sufficient enough to have passed the test of time. The creator came out with it a number of years ago and it can do a fair amount but you will be hard pressed to find support for it other than the authors.

Actually I haven't heard of it and that is why I had to go looking for some information. It looks like a wrapper and interpreter/compiler for DirectX. Designed mainly for games (it advertises in one place over "730 commands", and then in another "750 game oriented commands"), I would not reference it to a classic BASIC (or your idea of it, there are many varieties).

I hate to say this, but Visual Basic is better. It has far more capabilites of manipulating data, events, and applications/windows. Visual Basic.NET has even more ability. Now that I have elevated VB, I can say that it goes against everything a computer scientist and self-conscious programmer ever cared about. It's logic is flawed in many structures, it promotes or at least overlooks inefficiency, it is not portable, and it's abstraction and OO is generally simple and crude for the underlying processes. In many cases, the encapsulated objects are not generic or complete. Visual Basic has a strong focus on allowing contradictions and logic errors to get by. Perfect for humans, perhaps (but that is a flame in itself).

Try Altair BASIC here (online):

You might look into RealBASIC as an alternative.

SN---You got that right! But he might see some value in both depending upon the need or application of DarkBASIC.

Outlander---Speaking of 'need or application', what was it specifically you are looking to do? Game programming is obvious but more specifics might help in a more accurate evaluation....however, if you're just looking to have some fun then there would be nothing wrong with toying with it, of course. If, on the other hand, you are looking for an actual learning experience or just to gain some game programming understanding and knowledge then you are best to stay away from DarkBASIC and become more familiar with the de-facto Visual BASIC 6.0/.NET.

As usual, these are just my thoughts and opinions so take them as such.
