What do you need the volume serial number for?

The volume label can be changed with the label command or in "my computer".

What commands are you trying to use that give errors?

I use modified volume serial numbers (and labels) to ensure that the correct disk is mounted in removable disk caddies. If using VolumeID from SysInternals the drive letter and new volume serial number must be entered on the same command line. Eg: Volumeid.exe C: 1234-5678 and a reboot is required for the new vsn to be accessed/visible.

Note that the volume serial number will be changed every time the volume is formatted, the change is part of the Format process.

Hope this helps, good luck.
