Is there a way to send and receive data through an individual open serial comm port using VB2008?
I have an older piece of equipment that I have connected to a PC comm port, and want to capture the equipment output data stream into a flat file. the equipment sends data only after a request has been made. I have the communication working in a hyperterminal type program so when I send the command to the equipment, I get a reply. I'd like to automate the process with a VB app, but can't get a valid open connection that sends and receives data through the same connection. Is this possible? Sample code would be nice, but just a confirmation that I'm trying something that can or can't be done would be very appreciative.

What you want to achieve is absolutely feasible, I do that using a legacy DOS program I coded long time ago that still runs under Win XP. I can't support you in Visual Basic, but I can suggest an alternate way to autonate the device interaction.

Google for PUTTY, a free Open Source package that can replace HyperTerminal (no more delivered by Microsoft) and can be guided by scripting.

I never used it but people report it is very effective.
