checking the status of the comport

Specs: Windows XP
i am writing a(program) 'application for testing'( in c language,in turbo c),a hardware device, ( i am using a bios.h header file)
we have to interact with h/w device by using a 'serial port' (RS 232 cable), before we are sending a data to device, i want to know the serial port is ready are not? (i.e., whether, there is any error error in the RS 232 ?),
how can i know, ?

is there any bit function to know, the error in the com port?
plz help me

Basically you use an API call and try and open the port. The error code returned will indicate if the port is available, in use or whatever.

I have moved the question to the programming forum where it is better suited than hardware.
