Ask different people you will get differnt results.

I personally like c++.

But here is a run down

C, C++ are good for just about anything, but you would have to recompile the program on each type of OS you would send your code to.

VB is good, but not as much as C++, plus it is stuck on the Windoze machines.

Java is good if you want to go to multiple OS's but you would have to remember it is slower than C++ and VB because the code does not compile into an ~exe type file.

So take your pick.

I see you said you have Linux -- then you could do some Perl, Fortran, C, C++, just to name a few that you already have.

Have fun.

Deponds on what you want.
I think C and C++ are good lanuages. They give
you alot of power and alow you to dig deeper.

VB shouldn't even be one of your options unless
your a microsoft love'n idiot.

Java is also another good one. It's easier than
C/C++, but its not as powerful or as fast. Also
if you would wright a program under linux, you
could take that exact code and run it under
windows, so its very portable.

Call me crazy, but I would look into assembly
language too. Assembly is extremely powerful
and extremely fast, but it is more difficult.
By learning assembly you will have a better
understanding of how the computer works.I am
learning to program in assembly now and I think
it is a total blast, I love it(get the NASM assembler
if you do go with it).

Conclusion: Deponds on what you want. If you
want to head into more of the internet direction,
learn java. It deponds on the user.

The best programming language is the one
that you know that can do the job in the
with the least amount of effort subject to
the the constraints of the application and
available resources.

The best language for a situation changes with each situation.

What is a good language to learn on?

I would recommend learning C to begin with. Then you can advance to Java and C++. I believe that there are a lot of entry level jobs available if you can use VB (and VBA), but there are a lot of things that will cloud your exposure to the basics. Definitly C or a non-visual BASIC are good to begin with. Good Luck and Enjoy!

Kya Chal Raja Hai? :^)

This all depends on at what stage you are. Thére is no point to learn c or c++ if you want to programm for web. And if you want to programm for web then there are lot of scripting languages.
But if you want to have your hands in both the platforms web and Application development then java is best choice.
But again java is not used by all the companies in the case of web, because it proves to be expensive in terms of the time an application takes to complete.
