Post a few lines of the file.

the .txt file contains elements like:
prod tab/res tab
and so on ....

now i m having a loop to read the file line by line but by using delimiter for '/' i m getting the first and third value separated but for the second line it is separating prod as the first string and second string is blank because delimited i guess by default separates at any space. I want it to be separated into "prod tab" and "res tab" . finally i m setting the separated values in loop

You're telling us what you're getting, but not what you're doing. Post the relevant parts of the script.

yeah, from what you're saying (so far), the qualifiers:
"tokens=1,2 delims=/"
should work.
Whenever you employ a "delims" clause, all the defaults (space,tab) are overridden, so the space should not be an issue. Just make sure you don't have a space anywhere between the 'delims' clause and the terminal dbl-quote.
