batch file to change files name

Specs: Windows XP
Hi All,
I have 100 text files to rename. Now I want to write a batch file which will,

1) Change the name of each files to a specific names (so each of my 100 text files will have separate names). Now the new names are already listed in a text file.

2) I want to convert the file type to .xls as well.

Can any one help?

Thanks in advance

If you have access to ANY spreadsheet application I highly recommend that you look at this thread: [Solved] Command to move folders based on the entries in a text file. Pay particular attention to how the user solved his problem.

Essentially, you figure out what command to use to do one file. Then you create the pieces of that command in separate columns of your spreadsheet to build your batch file. Copy and paste your text file into the spreadsheet to get started. Hint: ".xls" can be in a separate column, or you can use 'Search and Replace', whichever works best for your situation.
