I know that it is possible to edit autoexec.bat and how to do it, but what i need to know is if you can use normal commands that you would use in a normal batch file. also does the file have to be in a certain order.

Autoexec.bat is just a batch file, the only special feature it holds is to autostart when booting. So you can set up it as you like taking into account it is planned to run only once, at start up.
So stated be aware under Windows XP Autoexec.bat, while in the root directory, is a dummy file and the commands it holds are disregarded except for the setting of environmental variables (Set commands).
Instead Autoexec.NT is used to set up the emulated DOS environment for a DOS window, and you can have multiple Autoexec.xx files, being Autoexec.NT the system default.
Autoexec.NT to Windows XP 32 bit environment is abosolutely irrilevant.
