geez. i am a programmer and developer. i want to update my skill set. i used to code in Visual C/C++ but dropped out of coding to pursue other interests instead of sitting in front of a tube all day. now i'm looking at returning i'm not sure what to use as a development language and platform.

I'm interested in creating cell phone apps but What the heck is the best and most popular way to decide which phone to do development for? is there any way to write an app and develop it for all phones?

same with computers . there is stuff out there I have never heard of . i could research all of the new named platforms and tools but feel this would be wasting time trying to decide.

any suggestions?

I don't really follow the smart phone development scene, but each platform has its language of choice.
iWhatever uses Objective C
Android uses Java
MS' mobile offerings use C/C++

I don't know of any cross-platform environments, but I do know Adobe was working on one until Apple blocked their attempts.
