Managing audiobooks on iPhone

One of the reasons that I bought an iPhone is to listen to audiobooks
in mp3 format. When I discussed this objective with the salesperson
at the ATT store, he pointed out that the iPod app has a separate
category for audiobooks - he failed to mention, however, that this is
only for books downlowded from Audible and that you can not move mp3
files into this area using iTunes.

I normally listen to music while driving to work and use the shuffle
feature which results in book selections being mixed in at random.
This is not a great problem for audiobooks that consist of only a few
files but I have severall that consist of 700+ files and that gets to
be a pain when listening to music using the shuffle feature.

I realize that I can create playlists that exclude the audiobooks but
I would prefer to be able to manage them separately.

My son has indicated that it is possible to convert mp3 files to acc
format, rename them to an m4b extension and move them to the
audiobooks folder on a jailbroken phone. This seems like a lot of
trouble and I would prefer not to jailbreak my phone before the
upcoming softare update which I assume will undo the jailbreakng.

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions for alternatives for
managing audiobooks, including alternative mp3 players that may be
available for the phone, with or without jailbreaking. Is there any
indication that this issue may be addressed in the upcooming upgrade?

Thanks

Bob Martin

I have over a hundred GB of audio book files I created myself from
various sources.

Select any group of files that make up an audio book in mp3 format and
right click, select INFO.

On the tab that says OPTIONS change it from Music to Audio Book. If
you have big 20 to 35 minute files add the remember playback position
so the iPod/iPhone/ or iTunes will remember where you are in the book
with an automatic bookmark. If your audio book is a zillion little
files of a couple of minutes each use a SMART PLAY LIST with the PLAY
COUNT=3D0 attribute in it, as soon as you finish a track the Apple
software drops it from view as it no longer is a member of that
playlist. When you sync it will not take up room on the portable
device since a played file doesn't match that smartplay list attirbute
and will be deleted if on the device

You can listen to it on your PC then sync to the iPhone and pick up in
the exact same place on the iPhone.

Works with any audio recording.

Also Audio book MP3s modified this way show up under Audio books in
iTunes and the iPod, no longer as MUSIC.

Send me $20 for saving you some money. I want to be able to buy Larry
a beer when I drive though SC.

By the way Bob there is another attribute in OPTIONS for each file
while you have them all selected - DO NOT SHUFFLE.
That way your aduio book will paly in order.

Also in iTunes sort the book to the proper order by clicking on the
column headers in a Play list before syncing that book to the iPhone.
If you are using a smart play list you can set only include checked
items for it and that way you can drop parts you have already heard by
unchecking them in the playlist. Use dynamic smart play lists to
manage your files. Smart Play lists are a feature that makes the iPod
so much better than all that other crap out there.

You are doing yourself a disservice by not using their power.

Drag all your audiobook mp3's into this and convert them into one, MPEG-4
Audio file, that iTunes and your iPhone will recognise as an audiobook.

I did this with 20 .mp3 audio files. Itunes crashed, I got "could not
synch with Iphone" error messages, had to reboot Iphone, and Itunes, and
finally when it all came back on, all those audio files are now gone from my
phone. I do have backups, but wondering why this worked for you and not me?

If you were looking for the files in your music section of iTunes they
will not be there now. They are Audio books and they will be in the
Audio book tab. If you do not see that one you need to go into
settings and enable it.

Also if you do not have artwork for your audio book and iTunes can not
find some for you, while you have all your book files selected for a
book do an INFO and look at the first tab. One the lower right there
is a spot for artwork.

In a decent browser like FireFox do a Google image search with -- "my
audio book name in quotes" audio book--. Usually a cover image for you
audio book will be the first image displayed. Right click on it and
select COPY then go to that little window in iTunes and select PASTE
then OK/ It will ask you if you want to change multiple items and you
say yes and wait for it to happen.

When making an audio book out of existing MP3 or AAC files gptp the
OPYIONS tab and select all
type -audio book
compilation - yes
remember playback position- yes***** the most important option as this
makes it a book markable file which is not a music fill but an audio
book file in Applese!

gap less album-yes ***important if you have a lot of small files
making up and audio book for smooth reading but in most cases you can
not notice the difference.
Do not shuffle - yes ***what idiot would listen to an audio book
shuffled - this prevents that from happening.

If you are changing all that and adding artwork select options first
then drop the image before OK

If your audio book seems to have more than one cover sheet then there
is an error in the data tags for one or more of you files that makes
up the audio book. Possibly different spelling on a tag item for
artist composer, album name, or something like that so iTunes will
think that particular CD is different from all the rest.

Worked OK this time around, thanks! Somehow, somewhere, something got
corrupt in the sync and the files got ditched. Rebooted Iphone, and Itunes,
and redid it all.
